Israeli Lawmaker Appeals to UN for Release of Biafran Leader
JERUSALEM — Afef Abed, a member of the Israeli Knesset, has formally requested the United Nations to intervene in the case of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is currently serving a life sentence in Nigeria for terrorism-related charges.
In a letter dated September 1, 2026, addressed to the UN Secretary-General and other high-ranking UN officials, Abed urged immediate attention to Kanu’s case, citing recommendations made by a UN working group that investigated his detention. The letter was obtained by DAILY POST on Thursday.
Kanu has been imprisoned in Sokoto Prison after his conviction by a Nigerian Federal High Court in November 2025. Abed emphasized the need for adherence to human rights and international law in Kanu’s situation, stating that the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention concluded that Kanu’s imprisonment is arbitrary and called for his prompt release and entitlement to reparations.
“The Working Group’s opinions are crucial in upholding fundamental rights under international law,” Abed wrote. The letter elaborated on the circumstances of Kanu’s arrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria, insisting that these actions necessitate thorough examination by relevant authorities.
Abed’s letter also highlighted calls for Kanu’s release from U.S. lawmakers, including Congressman John James, who have expressed concern over Kanu’s health and treatment while in custody. Allegations claim that the Nigerian authorities have not provided adequate medical care.
In his appeal, Abed called for the UN to solicit an official update from Nigeria regarding compliance with the Working Group’s directives and encouraged continued monitoring by UN human rights mechanisms. He emphasized the importance of a lawful resolution that respects human rights and the rule of law.
“The findings and recommendations from an independent examination deserve serious weight,” Abed stated. He expressed hope for a dignified solution that aligns with international legal principles and Kanu’s rights.
