Gov. Otti Declares Commitment to Succession Planning, Rejects ‘Godfather’ Role
Umuahia, Abia State – Governor Alex Otti of Abia State announced on Thursday that he will not assume the role of a political godfather nor will he impose his successor when he completes his second term in 2031.
During a reception for former Social Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate Ngozi Johnson-Chukwunenye and her supporters joining the Labour Party, Otti emphasized the importance of choosing a successor based on capability rather than perpetuating a culture of entrenched leadership.
“The most important thing you can give a people is good governance,” Otti stated. “Once people experience good governance, they will find it difficult to return to previous ways.”
He expressed confidence that his successor would be more qualified to lead the state. “We will all sit down and identify the best person for this job and then agree to support them,” Otti said, highlighting a collaborative approach to future leadership.
The governor also reiterated his intention not to seek another elective position after his current term. His administration is focused on fostering good governance and creating opportunities for younger leaders.
“Leadership should not be about one individual,” he remarked, pointing to the potential of younger generations. “There are smarter, better-trained individuals ready to take up leadership roles.”
Otti noted that his administration is committed to preparing young people for leadership through initiatives like the Abia Leadership Academy, which recently graduated over 1,080 participants aged 16 to 25. “These are the ones who will take over from us and they are being trained for tomorrow,” he added.
Despite facing criticism, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to improving governance and infrastructure throughout the state. He mentioned ongoing projects aimed at revitalizing Aba and Umuahia, with plans to extend development efforts to rural areas. “We will continue until we reach everywhere,” he said.
Otti commended Johnson-Chukwunenye for her dedication to supporting underprivileged children, remarking that her actions reflect a genuine concern for vulnerable members of society.
Mr. Ishmael Onuoha, the national vice-chairman of the Labour Party for the Southeast, addressed the gathering, aligning the party’s ideals with the national anthem’s themes and underscoring its commitment to the masses.
Abia Labour Party Chairman Peter Azubuike attributed the growing support for the party to Otti’s good governance, emphasizing preparation for the upcoming 2027 elections and grassroots mobilization.
Johnson-Chukwunenye expressed her support for Otti’s second term, citing her belief in his administration’s efforts to enhance the living conditions in Abia. She urged for legislation that ensures continuity in government projects across administrations.
