Youth found dead, as flood sacks Ugwueke community in Abia
UGWUEKE, Abia State — A 37-year-old man known only as Ejiuwa drowned during a flooding incident in Ugwueke, located in the Bende Local Government Area of Abia State.
Ejiuwa, a trader, was reportedly on his way home from the market when he became trapped in the rising waters. According to local sources, he was declared missing after the heavy rainfall prevented him from reaching home, leading villagers to organize a search. Unfortunately, his body was later recovered from the floodwaters. It was noted that his wife is pregnant with their first child.
The flooding caused significant destruction in the area, damaging homes, killing livestock, and destroying crops. Many residences were inundated, with water reaching as high as the rooftops in some cases. In addition to the loss of life, nearly 700 people have reportedly been left homeless and in need of assistance.
One victim, identified as Gideon Okorie, called for urgent intervention from both the Federal Government and the Abia State Government. “We are homeless, hungry, and exposed to possible disease outbreaks,” Okorie stated.
Another local resident, Promise Chijioke, shared the distressing impact of the flooding, stating, “I received a call from home yesterday that my father’s house has collapsed. This is too much.”
As of this report, officials from the Abia State Ministry of Environment and the Abia State Emergency Management Agency had not issued any official statements regarding the incident.
