2026 Ballon d’Or: John Utaka names best player, goalkeeper to win awards

John Utaka Endorses Matvey Safonov for Yashin Trophy
Former Super Eagles forward John Utaka has publicly endorsed Paris Saint-Germain and Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov as a strong candidate for the Yashin Trophy, an annual honor awarded by France Football to recognize the top goalkeeper in the world.
The shortlist for the Yashin Trophy includes notable players such as Yassine Bounou (Al Hilal), Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid), Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund), Joan García (Barcelona), Édouard Mendy (Al Ahli), Emiliano Martínez (Aston Villa/Chelsea), David Raya (Arsenal), Vozinha (Chaves/Colo-Colo), Unai Simón (Athletic Club), and Safonov.
In his remarks, Utaka praised Safonov’s goalkeeping skills, stating, “Matvey Safonov demonstrates exceptional goalkeeping abilities with remarkable potential. He possesses a genuine opportunity to be recognized as the year’s premier goalkeeper.” He also highlighted Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé as his top choice for the Ballon d’Or.
Safonov allowed a goal from Tolu Arokodare in the 71st minute during Russia’s 1-1 draw against Nigeria on June 6, 2025. More recently, he played a key role in Russia’s 2-0 victory over Iran on September 29, 2026, securing a clean sheet. However, there is ongoing uncertainty about his position as the starting goalkeeper for the upcoming match against the Super Eagles.
The Ballon d’Or ceremony is set to take place on October 26, 2026, at the Palladium Theatre in London. Alongside Utaka’s favorites, goalkeepers Unai Simón and David Raya are also being evaluated by analysts and media professionals as potential recipients of the prestigious award.
