Kano censorship board invites Kwankwasiyya singer Gandu over alleged regulation breach

The Kano State Censorship Board has summoned Tijjani Gandu, a prominent praise singer associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement, for allegedly breaching its regulations concerning the release of a musical work.
In a statement released on Saturday, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, the board’s Public Relations Officer, announced that Gandu is required to appear before the board to address the alleged infraction.
The board emphasized that musicians, writers, and producers of literary works must submit their songs, scripts, and written materials for review and authorization before public dissemination. This review process is designed to ensure that published content does not contain language or themes that could incite public disorder or disrupt societal peace and stability.
“The Board will not permit individuals to willfully violate its regulations under the pretext of exercising freedom of expression,” the statement read.
The board reiterated its commitment to upholding the law and stated that its regulations would be enforced impartially, without bias or favoritism.
The Censorship Board urged Gandu to comply with the law and attend the meeting, cautioning that failure to do so may be interpreted as non-compliance and could lead to additional actions.
