Ebonyi: ODII dismisses claim of stepping down in 2027 guber election

Ebonyi PDP Governorship Candidate Rejects Withdrawal Claims
Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, the governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, has firmly rejected allegations that he plans to withdraw from the 2027 gubernatorial race in favor of incumbent Governor Francis Nwifuru.
In a statement released Monday, Odii expressed his unwavering commitment to running for governor, asserting that any reports suggesting otherwise are false. The statement, shared by his spokesperson, Emmanuel Igwe, was circulated to members of the press in Abakaliki.
Odii’s camp emphasized that he will not be swayed by political discussions or negotiations aimed at altering his course. “The publication suggesting that Odii will withdraw is viewed as a political narrative from those opposed to his candidacy,” the statement reads.
Igwe challenged the sources behind the withdrawal claims, urging them to provide evidence for their assertions. “Where no statement exists from Chief Odii announcing a withdrawal, the public should not be misled into believing that such a decision has been made,” he added.
Furthermore, the statement called on journalists and bloggers to uphold the highest standards of professionalism in reporting on political matters, clarifying the difference between reporting intentions and confirmed decisions.
“The media has a responsibility to inform the public accurately and should not manufacture political decisions on behalf of candidates,” Igwe said. He also warned that those who publish unverified information should familiarize themselves with the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act of 2015 and other applicable laws regarding unlawful online content.
Odii’s camp has requested that publishers retract or correct the misleading story within 24 hours unless an authentic statement from Odii regarding any withdrawal is made public. The statement concluded by underscoring the importance of distinguishing between political speculation and verified facts, reminding media professionals of their duty to report responsibly.
