2027: Abdulsalami panel warns Tinubu, Atiku, Obi, others against inflammatory campaigns
The National Peace Committee (NPC), led by former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retired), has issued a warning to President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and other political figures against engaging in inflammatory and inciting practices as the 2027 general elections approach.
In a statement released on Monday and jointly signed by Abubakar and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the NPC raised concerns regarding over 60 election-related incidents reported nationwide within the past month. These incidents include political violence, intimidation, threats, attacks on political activities, and the spread of misinformation.
The committee urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to cease any dissemination of false, inflammatory, or inciting communications. The statement emphasized the need for all parties to adhere to their commitments and verify information before publication. It also called for active measures to prevent supporters from engaging in unlawful activities, intimidation, or disruption of political processes.
“As the 2027 electoral cycle progresses, the NPC’s message remains clear,” the statement read. “Every candidate must be able to campaign peacefully; every political party must organize lawfully; and every citizen should have the freedom to make political choices without fear of intimidation or coercion.”
Additionally, the NPC called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enhance its monitoring of political campaigns and ensure adherence to the Electoral Act of 2026 along with other applicable regulations governing political conduct. The committee insisted that when breaches are detected, INEC should take the necessary regulatory actions within its authority and promptly refer any suspected criminal violations to relevant law enforcement agencies.
