NDLEA Seizes 64 Bags of Cannabis Sativa in Kano Operation

KANO, Nigeria — The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 64 bags of cannabis sativa concealed in a cement-laden trailer on the Zaria–Kano road. The driver has been arrested, and an investigation into the network behind the drug trafficking operation is underway.

The seizure occurred on February 2, 2026, according to a statement from the NDLEA’s Kano Strategic Command. Following intelligence-led surveillance, officers attached to the Kiru Area Command monitored the truck’s movements before executing the interception.

The trailer, which had departed from Obajana in Kogi State and was en route to Mubi in Adamawa State, was found to contain the illegal drug hidden within a legitimate cargo of cement, reportedly produced by Dangote Cement.

Commander of the Kano Strategic Command, D.Y. Lawal, emphasized the agency’s resolve to disrupt drug trafficking activities. “This seizure is the result of meticulous intelligence work and the dedication of our officers,” Lawal stated. He noted that the drugs were likely intended for distribution in Kano ahead of the upcoming Ramadan period.

The driver remains in NDLEA custody as investigations continue. Lawal indicated that, under the direction of the agency’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), the Kano Command will enhance enforcement measures throughout the state.

“Patrols will be intensified, checkpoints reinforced, and intelligence-driven operations sustained,” he said. “We are actively investigating the network responsible for this shipment and aim to identify all collaborators. Those found guilty will face prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.”

The NDLEA also urged the public to assist in their efforts by providing timely information. “Continued community cooperation is essential to protect citizens and maintain peace during communal and religious observances,” the statement concluded.
