Ebola Virus Disease: Osun govt expands awareness, plans jingles, emergency isolation facility

Osun State Government Increases Efforts to Combat Ebola Virus Disease

The Osun State Government is intensifying public awareness campaigns about the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) as part of its strategy to prevent the disease from spreading within the state. This initiative includes the use of multilingual radio and television broadcasts.

The decision was made during a recent meeting of the State Steering Committee on EVD. Stakeholders gathered to assess the state’s preparedness and response to potential outbreaks.

A report from the Public Health Operations Centre of the Osun State Ministry of Health outlined several key measures aimed at enhancing disease prevention, surveillance, and emergency response. Among the top priorities identified by the committee were public education, the establishment of a designated emergency isolation facility, improved local government coordination, and the training of healthcare workers.

According to the report, the state government is expected to reclaim and prepare the designated emergency isolation facility within one week to strengthen its capacity for managing potential Ebola cases. The report emphasizes that coordination meetings related to Ebola preparedness should also be held throughout local government areas, with involvement from Local Government Rapid Response Teams.

The committee urged the Ministry of Health to initiate training programs for healthcare responders, starting with existing master trainers, and to arrange dedicated emergency ambulances for the transportation of suspected EVD cases.

To enhance public understanding of Ebola, the report recommends expanding health education jingles and materials in Hausa and other local languages, in addition to planned communications in Yoruba.

Furthermore, the committee advised the establishment of holding bays in select hospitals, ensuring a replenishment of essential protective supplies, improving disease surveillance, and fostering better coordination among rapid-response teams. It also called for increased collaboration with private healthcare practitioners to aid early detection and proper reporting of suspected cases.

Regarding funding and implementation, the report highlighted the necessity for emergency financial support, timely executive approvals, adequate resources, and well-defined responsibilities. It stated that the success of the proposed measures will rely on ongoing monitoring by the State Steering Committee.

“The agreed actions provide a framework for strengthening the state’s preparedness and response capacity,” the report noted. “Timely approvals, sufficient resources, and consistent monitoring will be essential for implementing the recommendations.”

These preparations by the Osun government follow a Federal Government directive urging hospitals nationwide to prepare isolation beds and improve infection prevention and control measures in response to EVD. The Federal Government has also indicated that 15 states have yet to update their response plans as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the country’s readiness to manage potential outbreaks.
