Borno NMA moves against quacks, inaugurates committee

Nigerian Medical Association in Borno State Launches Committee to Address Quackery

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — The Borno State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has established a committee aimed at combating the prevalence of unqualified individuals posing as medical practitioners in the region.

Dr. Kaka Ghazali, chairman of the chapter, announced the initiative on Monday during a press briefing in Maiduguri. This effort is intended to promote professionalism within the medical field, safeguard patient health, and ensure that only licensed and properly qualified personnel provide care.

“The committee will work in conjunction with the Directorate of Medical Services and other stakeholders to identify and eliminate malpractice within the profession,” Ghazali stated.

He also highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the Directorate and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, the regulatory body overseeing medical and dental practices in the country. “Any suspected cases of quackery that come to light will be reported to the appropriate authorities for investigation and possible action in line with legal standards,” he added.

Ghazali expressed concerns over the risks associated with unqualified practitioners, emphasizing that such quackery not only jeopardizes lives but also undermines public confidence in the healthcare system. He urged a unified response from professional organizations, regulatory bodies, and the government to address this issue, reiterating the NMA’s commitment to enhancing public health and improving healthcare standards throughout Borno State.
