2027: Tinubu inherited Nigeria on brink of collapse — Mutfwang

Plateau Governor Defends Economic Reforms and Campaigns for APC in 2027 Elections

JOS, Nigeria — Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang addressed party members during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council in Jos, emphasizing a unified political direction for the state as it approaches the 2027 elections.

Mutfwang defended the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu, stating that the current government inherited a struggling economy from former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. He described Nigeria’s financial state in 2023 as critical, citing unsustainable external debt levels and a significant decline in foreign reserves. “Nigeria was at risk of collapse, unable to service its external debts,” he said, pointing to the inability of international airlines to repatriate money as a direct consequence of the economic conditions.

He highlighted the restoration of Nigeria’s foreign reserves from over $3 billion, a stark contrast to the more than $40 billion accumulated in previous years, to over $50 billion currently. Mutfwang also criticized the past administration’s reliance on printing money, claiming that over N30 trillion had been injected into the economy without effective management.

Commenting on fuel subsidy policies, Mutfwang labeled the previous system fraudulent, alleging that the government had borrowed funds to address expenses supported by misleading claims. He asserted the need to eliminate these practices, stating, “You cannot continue to borrow money to give to thieves.”

Despite rising fuel costs, Mutfwang noted an improvement in fuel availability, contrasting current conditions with previous shortages that led to long queues at petrol stations. He expressed satisfaction with recent infrastructure initiatives, including the introduction of metro buses and the revival of the railway system in Jos.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Mutfwang asserted that there is “no vacancy” for leadership roles in the Presidential Villa or the Plateau Government House. He urged APC candidates to communicate their achievements to voters, fostering unity and encouraging respect for power rotation agreements between Nigeria’s North and South.

“The sharing arrangement must be respected, or it will come back to haunt us,” he stated, supporting the idea of alternating leadership between the regions.

On security, Mutfwang acknowledged ongoing challenges, asserting that his administration is taking concrete steps to enhance safety and facilitate the return of displaced persons to their communities. He pledged a comprehensive approach to tackling insecurity, emphasizing that solutions require sustained efforts.

As he concluded his remarks, Mutfwang expressed confidence in the APC’s prospects in the upcoming elections, declaring, “I am confident that come January 16, 2027, Plateau State will return President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with a resounding victory.”

The governor’s remarks solidify the APC’s position leading into the next electoral cycle as party officials are encouraged to mobilize support across the state.
