2027: Tinubu delayed tax collection over fear of election – Kwankwaso warned

NDC Vice-Presidential Candidate Accuses Government of Tax Delays
DUTSE, Jigawa State — Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the Vice-Presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of postponing the implementation of newly enacted tax laws. He claims that the delay stems from fears of potential political backlash in the lead-up to the 2027 general election.
Kwankwaso made these remarks during the inauguration of the NDC campaign council in Jigawa State, where he asserted that despite the passage of the tax reform bills, the federal government is hesitant to begin their enforcement. “The bill has been passed into law, but the Federal Government is now afraid of losing the election. That is why it has delayed the collection,” he stated.
The senator also expressed concern that if the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) secures another term in office, Nigerians could face an increase in tax collection efforts. “As soon as they get a second chance, God forbid, Nigerians will suffer from different kinds of tax collection. They will start going from house to house, checking even under your bed to collect taxes,” he added.
Kwankwaso further alleged that the session for the approval of the tax bill was chaired by a representative from Kano, while the Senate President deliberately abstained from attending to distance himself from the proceedings.
In his appeal to voters, Kwankwaso emphasized that the NDC aims to support the population by eliminating what he described as unnecessary taxes and prioritizing quality education. He urged Nigerians not to grant a second chance to the APC, claiming that re-electing the party would jeopardize the nation’s future.
