Police arrest father in Bauchi for chaining son for 17 years

Bauchi Police Arrest Man for 17-Year Imprisonment of Son
Bauchi, Nigeria — The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 72-year-old man, Malam Muhammad Lawan, on accusations of chaining his 40-year-old son in Shadawanka Village for 17 years.
The arrest followed a distress call from the community around 1:30 p.m. on February 16, 2026. Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, reported the incident in a statement on the social media platform X.
Upon arrival at the scene, a team led by the Divisional Police Officer of ‘B’ Division discovered the victim confined in a room, with a chain attached to his right leg. The officers immediately took necessary measures to secure the area.
Following his rescue, the victim was transported to ATBU Teaching Hospital for urgent medical care. Lawan was taken into custody and is currently facing multiple charges related to his treatment of his son.
The police have stated that the case is under investigation and have assured the public that all responsible parties will face justice.
