2027: ADC vows mass mobilisation over Electoral Act

ADC Vows to Mobilize Nigerians in Response to Electoral Act Amendments

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) announced Thursday its plans to mobilize citizens across Nigeria to safeguard the integrity of future elections. The party expressed its concerns following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent approval of the amended Electoral Act, which the ADC argues undermines democratic credibility.

In a statement released by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC criticized the expedited nature of the president’s approval of the bill amid significant public dissent.

“By hastily assenting to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, President Tinubu has effectively jeopardized credible elections, undermining Nigeria’s democracy,” the statement read. The ADC accused the president of introducing ambiguity and excessive discretion in the electoral collation and transmission process.

The party questioned the government’s confidence in a transparent electoral process, noting, “Despite claims of controlling over 30 state governments and holding a majority in both chambers of the National Assembly, the rushed approval of this amendment raises concerns. Why would a dominant government seek rapid changes to the electoral framework unless it harbors doubts about a truly transparent and competitive electoral process?”

The ADC’s concerns also extend to the implications of the amendment for the upcoming elections. The party warned that, without robust guarantees for electronic transparency, voters may feel compelled to physically safeguard their ballots to prevent discrepancies, mirroring challenges faced in past elections.

As a recognized political party in Nigeria, the ADC affirmed its commitment to defend the country’s democracy. “We are ready, willing, and prepared to protect the sanctity of Nigeria’s democracy through every lawful and constitutional means available to us,” the statement continued.

The ADC called for vigilance and united participation among Nigerians in defense of their constitutional rights, asserting that the will of the populace must prevail against any hastily enacted legislation.
