Lagos: LAWMA arrests two for public dumping of refuse

LAWMA Arrests Two for Illegal Refuse Disposal in Ikosi-Ketu
LAGOS — Two individuals were arrested by operatives of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) for illegally dumping waste at the Ikosi Y-Junction median, near the LAMATA BRT Bus Yard.
The suspects, identified as James Aderele, 25, from Osun State, and Ajoke Ayinde, 37, from Oyo State, were taken to the Special Environmental Offences Mobile Court in Oshodi. They face charges under Lagos’ environmental laws for indiscriminate refuse disposal. LAWMA emphasized that such actions pose significant health risks and demonstrate a disregard for public hygiene.
“Cleanliness isn’t just government work; it’s everyone’s responsibility,” LAWMA stated. The agency urged residents to remain vigilant against littering and illegal dumping, emphasizing the collective responsibility of the community to protect the environment.
The arrests were part of LAWMA’s Waste Surveillance, Investigation, and Enforcement initiative, which aims to deter future pollution in busy areas like Ikosi-Ketu. Complaints from commuters and residents regarding accumulation of trash near the median and bus yard prompted the agency’s swift response.
LAWMA reiterated the importance of community cooperation, encouraging residents to report offenders and utilize proper waste disposal channels. “Environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and proactive—see something, say something,” the agency added.
Through these efforts, LAWMA aims to foster cleaner public spaces and reduce health hazards across the city.
