We won’t retreat  —  ADC condemns alleged assassination attempt on Obi

ADC Condemns Alleged Assassination Attempt on Peter Obi

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned an alleged assassination attempt on Peter Obi and other party leaders in Benin City, calling the incident a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement released by party spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described how the attackers reportedly followed Obi and ADC members from the party’s secretariat to the residence of party leader John Odigie-Oyegun before opening fire.

The party characterized the attack as “a grave and disturbing development” for the nation’s democratic landscape, noting its timing against the backdrop of threats made last year by Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, who warned Obi against visiting the state.

The ADC expressed shock at the assertion that such threats could escalate to include an assassination plot. “We didn’t know at the time that the Governor’s threat would include an assassination plot,” the statement noted.

The ADC emphasized that the incident tarnishes Nigeria’s democracy and warned that violence and intimidation undermine the electorate’s will. “Let it be clearly understood: violence and intimidation are the weapons of those who fear the will of the people. Such actions stain our democracy and must be condemned by all who believe in freedom,” the statement read.

The party affirmed its resolve not to be deterred by the attack. “The ADC will neither bow nor retreat. We will stand firm, speak without fear, and continue the peaceful struggle for a Nigeria where the opposition is not punished and every citizen is free,” it added.
