Sit-at-home: Soludo reopens Nkwo Nnewi after one-week closure, shuts Ihiala market

Anambra Governor Reopens New Motorcycle Spare Parts Market After One-Week Closure

Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has reopened the New Motorcycle Spare Parts Market, commonly referred to as Nkwo Nnewi, following a one-week closure.

The market was sealed last Monday by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Trade and Markets, Evaristus Uba, after officials observed a low turnout of traders. This decline indicated non-compliance with a government directive aimed at ending the Monday sit-at-home orders.

Uba, representing the governor, had warned that if traders did not increase their attendance in the following week, the ban on the market would remain in effect.

On the reopening day, the chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Echezona Anazodo, visited the market and noted a significant turnout of traders. “I’m pleased to see that traders have complied with the order to resume business. If there had been even half this turnout last week, the market would not have been closed,” he stated.

Anazodo also mentioned that measures would be taken against traders who failed to open their shops, emphasizing that the actions of a few should not jeopardize the entire market.

In related news, unconfirmed reports indicate that a market in Ihiala Local Government Area has also been closed for failing to adhere to the sit-at-home order. Sources suggest that government officials found the market locked and subsequently imposed a one-week closure.

Ihiala is noted for its historical ties to separatist activities during the height of the Biafra agitation, with reports of criminal elements posing as agitators creating a hazardous environment for business operations.
