How man who lodged with commercial sex worker died in Kwara hotel fire

Man Dies in Fire at Ilorin Hotel

Ilorin, Nigeria — Authorities are investigating a fire incident that resulted in the death of a man at Lafia Hotel last Thursday. The fire broke out shortly before midnight, around 11:38 PM, at the establishment located on Coca-Cola Road.

According to initial reports, the unidentified man was staying in a room designated for short-term rentals. Graphic images from the scene indicated that he was burned beyond recognition.

Investigations revealed that the man likely checked into the room of a woman engaging in commercial sex. It is believed that the woman had gone out to purchase items and locked the man inside, violating the hotel’s policy against overnight male guests.

Operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) are looking into the circumstances of the incident, as all individuals associated with the commercial activities at the hotel have since left the premises.

Fire officials stated that the blaze was likely initiated by a power surge. The fire affected a building comprising two flats, each with three bedrooms, and quickly engulfed the structure in smoke, complicating efforts for occupants to escape.

Hassan Adekunle, spokesperson for the state fire service, confirmed that firefighters were able to bring the fire under control by approximately 11:51 PM. He noted that the fire erupted shortly after power was restored, contributing to its rapid spread.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to gather more information regarding the incident.
