Lagos set to demolish houses under high-tension cables in Alagbado/Oke-Odo

Lagos State Authority Initiates Demolition of Structures Near High-Tension Cables

LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Informal Space Management Authority (LASISMA) announced plans to demolish buildings situated beneath high-tension power lines in the Alagbado/Oke-Odo area along the AIT road corridor.

On Tuesday, the state government released a statement indicating that LASISMA officials had commenced operations in the Alagbado/Oke-Odo axis to address significant physical planning violations. The initiative specifically targets structures constructed directly under or perilously close to high-tension power lines.

This intervention follows directives from Dr. Olumide Oluyinka, the Honourable Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development. The effort aligns with the state’s broader initiative to maintain urban order and mitigate potential disasters.

TPL Emmanuel Seyi Ogunyemi led the operation on behalf of General Manager TPL Daisi Oso. Ogunyemi and his team issued contravention notices to occupants and marked buildings encroaching on the hazardous zones. The atmosphere was characterized by focused engagement as officials instructed property owners to relocate their structures away from the danger areas. Officials emphasized that the operation was not merely bureaucratic but a vital measure to protect human life.

According to the LASISMA team, the initiative is crucial for safeguarding lives, reducing environmental hazards, and ensuring compliance with the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law of 2019, as amended.

During the operation, Ogunyemi underscored the agency’s commitment to ongoing monitoring and enforcement. “Structures built under or too close to high-tension lines pose serious safety risks to residents and the wider community,” he stated.

To support the sustainability of the operation, the LASISMA team engaged with the leadership of the Agbado/Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area (LCDA). In a subsequent meeting with LCDA Chairman Abiodun Jimoh Ejigbadero, the discussion focused on fostering collaboration between state and local authorities to promote proper land use and sustainable growth.

Ejigbadero welcomed the initiative and committed his administration to working with LASISMA to prevent the proliferation of illegal structures. “Our administration is ready to work closely with LASISMA and other relevant agencies to ensure orderly development and urban aesthetics across the LCDA,” he said.

This enforcement action is part of LASISMA’s ongoing efforts to uphold planning standards across informal urban and open spaces in Lagos. The overarching goal is to enhance safety, order, and visual appeal, ultimately benefiting all residents of the city.
