Lassa Fever: NCDC urges states to step up response as cases rise

Nigerian Centre for Disease Control Urges States to Enhance Lassa Fever Response

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has called on state governments to bolster their responses as Lassa fever cases rise nationwide.

In a recent update, the NCDC reported an increase in infections across several states, raising alarm about the potential spread of the disease, which is known to be more prevalent during the dry season.

The agency underscored the importance of improved surveillance, early detection, and appropriate treatment for those infected. Additionally, it highlighted the necessity for enhanced public awareness regarding the transmission and prevention of Lassa fever.

Transmission primarily occurs through contact with food or household items contaminated by rats. Health officials have advised Nigerians to practice proper hygiene, securely store food, and maintain clean environments to minimize exposure.

The NCDC encouraged individuals exhibiting symptoms such as fever, weakness, headache, or bleeding to seek medical attention promptly, noting that early treatment can significantly improve survival rates.

While the agency expressed its commitment to providing resources and technical assistance to states, it emphasized that stronger local action is crucial for effectively controlling the outbreak.
