Transporters indispensable in national development – FCTA Mandate Secretary

Transport Officials Highlight Role of Transporters in National Development

Abuja — Barrister Elechi Chinedum, the Secretary for Transportation in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), emphasized the critical role of transporters in national development during the launch of a week-long Drivers’ Care Initiative on Monday.

Chinedum, a former Commissioner for Transport in Abia State, praised transporters for their significant contributions to the economy at the initiative’s flag-off ceremony held at Jabi Park in Abuja. The event was organized by Transporters for Tinubu 2027 and aims to provide free eye tests, drug abuse awareness, and access to soft loans through the Transporters Cooperative Society to transporters in the Federal Capital Territory.

Key representatives from various transport unions, including the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), attended the ceremony along with industry stakeholders.

During his speech, Chinedum highlighted the indispensable nature of transportation in everyday life. “Transportation is the most important part of our lives. Without it, how will people move? How will goods get from Abia to Abuja?” he stated. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the transport sector and encouraged drivers to take advantage of the free services being offered.

The FCTA Secretary pointed out ongoing infrastructure improvements within the transportation sector, including the construction of modern bus terminals in Mabushi, Kugbo, and the Central Area. He also urged drivers to prioritize their health through regular eye examinations and to steer clear of substance abuse.

Prince Segun Obayendo, National Coordinator of Transporters for Tinubu 2027, shared his personal experiences from his time as a cab driver. “I know what you go through. I am one of you,” he said, calling for modernization of motor parks and encouraging transporters to engage with the government to advocate for enhanced facilities. “Government cannot give what you don’t ask for. Support them, then make your demands. This is just the beginning,” he added.

FCT NURTW Chairman Prince Dauda Abdulakadir expressed appreciation for the initiative, stating, “The more we contribute, the more we benefit. 2027 is close. Let us do what will help our future,” while acknowledging government support, including the provision of compressed natural gas (CNG) buses.

Mr. Femi Aderemi, a transport sector stakeholder, reinforced the importance of transporters, stating, “Your work is this country’s economic lifeline. We are here to appreciate you, to support your health, and to ensure you have a seat at the table when transport policies are made.”
