‘Nigerian people happy for me’ – Brighton’s Kayode names country he’ll play for in the future

Brentford’s Michael Kayode Expresses Desire to Represent Italy in National Team

Brentford right-back Michael Kayode has expressed his aspiration to play for Italy’s senior national team in the future, while also emphasizing his pride in his Nigerian heritage.

Born in Borgomanero, Italy, to Nigerian parents Victoria and Anthony, Kayode has represented Italy at the U18, U19, and U21 levels. Currently, he is provisionally tied to the Italian Football Federation, which strengthens their position in pursuing his selection over Nigeria.

Kayode’s performances have drawn the attention of Italian national team managers Gennaro Gattuso and Eric Chelle. However, he remains focused on the opportunity to represent the country of his birth. This month, he may have the chance to earn his first senior cap during Italy’s 2026 World Cup playoff match against Northern Ireland.

“Every player dreams of being part of the national team, especially now that the team has qualified for the World Cup. I really hope we qualify,” Kayode said in a recent interview with The Athletic. He acknowledged the critical role of maintaining strong form at Brentford to secure a call-up for the national squad.

“It’s important to perform really well at the club. If you don’t do well at your club, you won’t get called up,” he added. “I’m happy that the Nigerian people are happy for me. The opportunity to play for both nations is amazing.”
