Obasanjo, IBB consulted in move to end PDP rift

Efforts Underway to Reconcile Factions Within the PDP

ABUJA — Recent consultations involving former Heads of State Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida are part of a broader effort to resolve internal conflicts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Party chieftain Gbenga Hashim initiated the discussions to help mend the rift created by prolonged legal battles and factional disputes.
The mediation initiative aims to provide a political solution that could stabilize the PDP as it approaches upcoming elections. Sources indicated that Hashim has been discreetly reaching out to influential figures across the party’s rival factions.
Confirming the involvement of Obasanjo and Babangida, multiple sources noted that these consultations fall within a larger mediation process that began in January. Initially focused on leaders of the Turaki bloc, the discussions have since expanded to include prominent figures aligned with former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.
According to insiders, the primary focus of these talks has been the political risks associated with continued litigation within the party. Consultations with Obasanjo and Babangida are viewed as an effort to leverage the moral authority of the PDP’s founding members during a crucial period for the party.
Simultaneously, legal developments have also bolstered the call for reconciliation. During a recent appeal hearing at the Court of Appeal in Ibadan, justices suggested that the disputing parties consider reconciliation, highlighting the need for political stability and effective dispute resolution.
Last weekend marked a potential turning point, as intensified communications between key figures from opposing factions reportedly led to an agreement in principle to harmonize their positions, irrespective of pending court decisions. “The temperature has dropped. People are talking again,” remarked a senior party official.
Preparations for deeper consultations and structured face-to-face discussions are underway, although formal agreements have yet to be finalized. Party insiders emphasize the importance of unity for members with ambitions for State Assembly, governorship, and legislative positions.
The PDP’s performance in recent Area Council elections indicates the resilience of its grassroots structure, while leaders acknowledge that unity at the top is vital for sustaining momentum. “The structure is strong. What was missing was cohesion,” a party source stated.
As legal proceedings continue and political ambitions remain active, the durability of this tentative reconciliation remains uncertain. However, communication channels between factions aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Minister Nyesom Wike, previously tense, have recently reopened.
