DSS frees Sowore’s media aide detained over drone

Nigerian Journalist Released by Department of State Services

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Zainab Sodiq, a media aide to journalist Omoyele Sowore, following intervention by the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria.

Sodiq was taken into custody for possessing a drone, which she was reportedly intercepted with at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on July 6. She intended to travel with the device but was detained for lacking the required End User Certificate.

In a statement Saturday, IPI Nigeria Secretary Malam Ahmed Shekarau confirmed Sodiq’s release around 7:30 p.m. Friday. Shekarau noted that after her initial detention, she was permitted to continue her journey to Abuja but was instructed to report back to DSS headquarters on Wednesday, leading to her subsequent detention.

Musikilu Mojeed, President of IPI Nigeria, expressed gratitude for Sodiq’s release and acknowledged the DSS for their cooperation. “We are pleased that this matter has been resolved and that Ms. Sodiq has regained her freedom,” he said. He emphasized the importance of balancing security enforcement with respect for journalists’ rights.

The organization commended all who supported efforts for Sodiq’s release and reiterated its commitment to fostering dialogue between security agencies and the media, ensuring that national security concerns do not hinder press freedom.

IPI Nigeria serves as the Nigerian affiliate of the International Press Institute, a global network of media professionals from over 100 countries.
