Police explain arrest of Osun politician over N8.5m petition

Osun State Police Address Arrest of Local Resident
OSOGBO, Nigeria — The Osun State Police Command has provided details regarding the recent arrest of Soladoye Fasanjo Keji, following public outcry from a group calling itself the Concerned Youths of Odo Otin Local Government Area.
In a statement released on Sunday, Police spokesperson DSP Abiodun Ojelabi explained that Keji’s arrest was necessitated by his failure to respond to multiple invitations related to a formal complaint against him. The petition, submitted by Atelele & Egbedinini Chambers on behalf of Hon. Damilare Eniade Francis, was filed with the Commissioner of Police on February 25, 2026.
The allegations against Keji include obtaining money under false pretenses, criminal intimidation, and threats to life. The police reported that he is accused of unlawfully acquiring N8.5 million, which was transferred to him in November 2025. This amount was intended for procuring and distributing food packages to vulnerable residents during the holy month of Ramadan.
Authorities stated that Keji had claimed he could facilitate these supplies through a food store he purportedly owned. However, when the promised supplies were not delivered, the complaint was lodged, leading to an investigation.
Kejii was arrested around 7:45 p.m. on March 7, 2026, in the Faji area of Okuku. The police noted that their actions followed repeated instances of the suspect not complying with requests for questioning.
“The arrest became necessary only after these repeated instances of non-compliance, in line with standard police procedure to ensure the suspect appears for questioning,” the statement read.
The Osun State Police emphasized that the operation was conducted professionally and in compliance with the law. They assured the public that Keji’s rights, including access to legal representation, are being upheld.
The Police Command urged the community, including leaders and youth groups, to remain calm as the investigation proceeds, assuring them that the case will be forwarded to court once completed.
