2026 World Cup: Ndidi denies comment against FIFA over Congo case

Super Eagles Captain Denies Comments on FIFA Dispute
Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has denied reports suggesting that he commented on the ongoing dispute between the Nigeria national football team and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) regarding a potential spot in the 2026 World Cup intercontinental play-off.
Recent media coverage indicated that Ndidi sought clarification from FIFA about the situation and called for transparency concerning a petition allegedly filed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) contesting DR Congo’s qualification. However, Ndidi has distanced himself from these claims.
During a discussion on the YouTube program AYSuga Channel, host Ayo Olu Ibadapo reported that Ndidi was surprised by the mention of the statements. Ibadapo stated that Ndidi categorically denied making any comments related to the ongoing case under FIFA’s review.
“He expressed surprise that I brought it to his attention, as he did not make any such statements,” Ibadapo said, reiterating that the captain has not discussed the matter with anyone.
This clarification comes amid growing speculation about Nigeria’s efforts to secure a position in the intercontinental play-off for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The dispute reportedly centers on Nigeria’s challenges regarding the eligibility of certain players who participated for DR Congo during the African play-off stage.
The case has been submitted to FIFA for evaluation, though the governing body has yet to announce a final decision.
