I didn’t want to throw Nigeria into turmoil – Tinubu on why he signed Electoral Act

Tinubu Justifies Signing Electoral Act Amid National Assembly Support

ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stated that he felt he had “no choice” but to sign the recently passed Electoral Act, citing overwhelming support from the National Assembly of Nigeria.

During a meeting with leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) on Wednesday at the State House, Tinubu emphasized his commitment to the rule of law, arguing that rejecting the bill could have led to political instability.

“There was an overwhelming majority in the National Assembly that passed the law. If I had serious questions or reservations, I would have raised them,” Tinubu remarked. “But I submitted myself to the principle of the rule of law and democracy. I signed, and the rest is history.”

The president underscored the importance of cooperation among political actors, noting that the nature of politics often brings satisfaction only to those who succeed. “The game of politics is sweet only when you’re winning,” he said.

Tinubu urged both leaders and citizens to foster an environment of mutual support to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions. “We must accommodate one another. We must help one another. We must strengthen the platform. But in democracy, yes, there must be peace, stability, and commitment to the rule of law,” he added.
