Tension in Niger as youths attempt to disarm soldiers enforcing curfew

Tension Erupts in Borgu Local Government Area Following Youth Altercation with Soldiers
BORG Local Government Area, Niger State — Tensions flared last night as a group of youths allegedly attempted to disarm soldiers enforcing a curfew in the region before fleeing the scene, according to security expert Zagazola Makama.
The incident occurred around 10:35 p.m. on March 10, when troops from the 221 Battalion stationed at Wawa Cantonment were conducting patrols to uphold a curfew instituted by the Chairman of Borgu Local Government.
While patrolling near the Correctional Service Office in New Bussa, the soldiers intercepted several motorcycles, prompting an aggressive response from the youths, who reportedly threw stones and attempted to wrest a firearm from the soldiers while shouting abusive language.
In response to the escalating situation, the soldiers discharged warning shots into the air, successfully dispersing the group. Following the incident, the Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service alerted local police authorities.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in New Bussa quickly deployed additional security personnel to the area; however, the youths had already left by the time they arrived. Community leaders, including the village head, were subsequently convened and reminded to help maintain peace and prevent confrontations with security forces.
No arrests were made and no injuries were reported, while military patrols in the area continued as planned.
