GONIRI, Yobe State — Troops from the Joint Task Force (North East), deployed in Goniri, successfully thwarted a bandit attack, resulting in the neutralization of more than 20 bandits, including a senior commander, on March 11.
Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North East) under Operation HADIN KAI, reported that the bandits were detected through surveillance assets as they approached from Goniri village and the Ngamdu junction axis, indicating an attempt to surround military positions.
In response to the threat, the soldiers employed superior firepower and tactical maneuvers. Among those reported killed was Abu Yusu, known as the Munzir of Dursula.
Troops recovered numerous bodies of the neutralized assailants, along with an array of weapons and equipment that were abandoned during the retreat. This included machine guns, AK-47 rifles, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and assorted ammunition.
Following the initial engagement, further operations in the vicinity of Gwaigomari within the Timbuktu Triangle led to the discovery of additional terrorist bodies during follow-up patrols.
