Ambassadorial postings: Nigeria causing lots of embarrassment – Fagbemi

Political Scientist Critiques Nigeria’s Diplomatic System

In the wake of controversy surrounding the announcement of ambassadorial postings, political scientist and national security expert Kunle Fagbemi has described Nigeria’s diplomatic system as dysfunctional.

Fagbemi made his comments during a live interview on Arise Television, which was monitored by DAILY POST. He emphasized that the Federal Government should refrain from publicizing the names and postings of ambassador-designates until they have completed the required induction course.

He further stated that such information should be released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs rather than the presidency.

“We are operating a dysfunctional diplomatic practice,” Fagbemi said, highlighting issues with the management by both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the presidency. He urged the Special Adviser on Information, Bayo Onanuga, to consider the implications of his public statements.

Fagbemi pointed to a recent statement from Onanuga, which he said exacerbated tensions. The statement noted that the names and postings of ambassador-designates should not be made public until they have completed their induction course. Fagbemi criticized the communication, stating it unintentionally suggested that other stakeholders might also withhold necessary agreements, potentially delaying the ambassadors’ arrival at their posts.

This commentary underscores ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s diplomatic framework and the need for clearer communication regarding ambassadorial appointments.
