Four Dead in Lekki-Epe Expressway Crash Involving Truck and Commercial Bus
LAGOS—A devastating traffic accident along the Lekki-Epe Expressway claimed the lives of four passengers after a truck collided with a commercial bus over the weekend.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that the fatal incident occurred near Beechwood in Shapati, heading toward Ajah. The crash involved a HOWO truck with registration number KNN 313 YL and a Suzuki commercial mini bus, commonly referred to as “Korope.”
Preliminary investigations indicate that the truck driver lost control, causing the vehicle to veer across the road and strike the oncoming bus. “Preliminary assessments revealed that the articulated truck lost control while in motion, leading to a head-on collision with the passenger bus,” LASTMA stated.
The impact of the collision resulted in the immediate deaths of four male passengers. Additionally, four other individuals—two men and two women—sustained serious injuries after becoming trapped within the damaged bus. Emergency responders from LASTMA, along with passersby, quickly arrived at the scene to assist in rescuing those trapped in the wreckage.
The injured passengers were transported to Hamon Royal Hospital for urgent medical treatment. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Shency Hospital Morgue with the assistance of an ambulance from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and extended well wishes for the recovery of those injured. He commended the prompt response of emergency officials and community members who aided in the rescue efforts.
Bakare-Oki advised all motorists, particularly drivers of heavy vehicles, to exercise caution, adhere to traffic regulations, and practice safe driving techniques to avert further tragedies on the road.
