Police Foil Highway Robbery in Oyo State, One Suspect Arrested

Operatives of the Oyo State Police Command successfully thwarted a highway robbery and apprehended a suspect during a security operation along the Ogbomoso-Ilorin Expressway.

The incident was reported in a statement released on Monday by police spokesperson Ayanlade Olayinka. It occurred near Egbeda Village when a joint patrol team, consisting of police officers and local vigilantes, confronted suspected robbers who had barricaded the road.

According to police reports, the suspects targeted a tanker laden with diesel, driven by Surajudeen Sulaiman, and stole valuables from the driver and his assistants. A gun battle ensued as the suspects attempted to flee, resulting in the arrest of one individual, identified as 32-year-old Dere Yahaya. Other members of the group managed to escape into the adjacent bushes, believed to be injured from gunfire.

Following the incident, security operatives initiated a search operation in the surrounding area to locate the fleeing suspects.

Oyo State Commissioner of Police Femi Haruna praised the prompt response of the operatives and local security partners involved in the operation. He also acknowledged the support from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu in enhancing policing efforts across the nation.

Police urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to relevant security agencies.
