Abia community counts losses after alleged destruction of farms by cattle

Ike Mgboko Traditional Leader Condemns Crop Destruction by Cattle

OBINGWA, Abia State — Daniel Iheadindueme, the Traditional Prime Minister of Ike Mgboko autonomous community, has raised concerns over the destruction of newly cultivated crops in the region, allegedly caused by cattle belonging to Fulani herdsmen.

Iheadindueme, who also serves as the Commander of Abia State Community Policing/Vigilante, identified the affected areas as Mgboko Okpulor village, Mgboko Amairi village, and the Nne Nkute area. According to him, herdsmen drove their cattle onto the farms and threatened local farmers while allowing the animals to graze on the newly germinated crops.

He warned that this ongoing issue poses a significant threat to food security and the economic stability of the community, emphasizing that the destruction of crops could increase hunger in rural areas.

The community leader urged herdsmen to respect property lines and refrain from any violent actions, stating that individuals who violate these guidelines will be turned over to law enforcement for prosecution. Iheadindueme also called on leaders within the Hausa community in Abia State to educate their members about adherence to local laws and regulations.

In light of the situation, Iheadindueme expressed gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for prioritizing the safety of Abia residents and encouraged farmers to remain vigilant, advising them to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
