Eze Cyril Ogbenna Addresses Concerns over Adulterated Honey in Nigeria
Umuahia, Abia State — Eze Cyril Ogbenna, the traditional ruler of the Uzi Amizi autonomous community in Olokoro, expressed alarm on Sunday regarding the proliferation of fake and adulterated honey in markets across Nigeria. His remarks were made during an interview with journalists on National Urban Beekeeping Day.
Ogbenna characterized the rise in counterfeit honey as a significant threat to public health and the integrity of Nigeria’s honey industry. He noted that such products jeopardize consumer safety, undermine the livelihoods of honest beekeepers, and erode trust in the market.
“Adulterated honey poses potential health risks, particularly to vital organs,” Ogbenna said. He called on the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), along with other health regulatory and security agencies, to enhance market surveillance and enforce stricter quality assurance measures.
The traditional ruler also condemned unethical practices involving some traders, who allegedly mix dead bees with counterfeit honey before selling it as genuine. He urged the Federal Government and state authorities to take action to protect citizens from these harmful products.
“To safeguard public health, consumers should only purchase honey from reputable producers and registered outlets,” Ogbenna advised. “This practice will support honest beekeepers and help combat rising health issues related to kidney and liver failures among Nigerians.”
In addition to addressing counterfeit products, Ogbenna encouraged Nigerian youths to consider beekeeping as a viable agricultural venture. He described the enterprise as environmentally friendly, affordable, and capable of providing sustainable income.
