Akpabio, Oshiomhole clash over Fasina’s confirmation as ambassador
Senate Drama Erupts Over Ambassadorial Confirmation Amid Allegations
There was notable tension in the Senate on Thursday as Senate President Godswill Akpabio clashed with Senator Adams Oshiomhole regarding the confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina as a non-career ambassadorial designate. This disagreement surfaced amid ongoing sexual harassment allegations against Fasina.
Oshiomhole expressed concern that endorsing a nominee facing such allegations could convey an inappropriate message, particularly to Nigerian women. He emphasized the seriousness of the situation by pointing out that two women have formally accused the professor, and these cases are currently pending in various courts.
“Nigerian women have brought to the attention of this Senate that the professor in question has been accused by two women, not just orally,” Oshiomhole stated. “While he is presumed innocent until proven guilty, it is important for the Senate to exercise sensitivity. Endorsing a man under these circumstances could be perceived as dismissive of the feelings of women.”
He suggested that it might be prudent to wait until the legal matters are resolved before proceeding with the confirmation.
The debate took place shortly before the Senate considered the report from the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs. The committee, chaired by Senator Sani Bello (APC, Niger North), presented the findings through Senator Simon Lalong (APC, Plateau South), leading to Fasina’s confirmation as ambassadorial designate.
