Awka royal stool: I’m ready to go to jail – Ndigwe dares Soludo

Awka Traditional Ruler Defends Position Amid Controversy

AWKA, Nigeria — Obi Austin Ndigwe, the traditional ruler of Awka Kingdom, has stated he is prepared to face imprisonment rather than relinquish the throne granted to him by the people. In a recent social media video recorded in a village square, Ndigwe emphasized that his title as the Obi of Awka was conferred by the local community, distinguishing it from the broader title of the Anambra monarch.

The controversy surrounding Ndigwe’s claim escalated following a report from a panel set up by Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo. The panel determined that Obi Gibson Nwosu is the only legitimate monarch of Awka Kingdom. Last week, members of the Ozo Society of Awka visited Governor Soludo at the Government House, where he advocated for a central palace for the kingdom’s monarchs and reiterated that Nwosu holds official recognition.

Governor Soludo warned Ndigwe that continuing to assert his claim could lead to legal consequences, including imprisonment. In the viral video, Ndigwe appeared to respond defiantly to the governor’s remarks, asserting, “If performing the function given to me by my people is what would make me go to jail, I’m ready for it.”

He further clarified that he is recognized as the monarch of Awka, not of Anambra, suggesting to the governor that he should refrain from interference in local affairs. His statements were met with enthusiasm from attendees at the village square.

The video has sparked significant discussion online, with some questioning why local authorities have not taken action against Ndigwe, while others called for Soludo to allow him to serve the community without obstruction.
