Benue South killings: Amnesty International demands probe into death of 15 residents
Amnesty International Nigeria has urged Nigerian authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the killings of at least 15 people in the Ugboju District of Otukpo Local Government Area, Benue State. The human rights organization warns that these attacks signify a growing threat to the fundamental right to life.
In a statement released on its verified Facebook page Tuesday, Amnesty International detailed that the most recent attack occurred on July 28, 2026, in Efeyi-Ugboju. Armed groups reportedly killed at least 14 individuals during this incident. This attack followed the death of another resident in nearby Ipom-Ugboju the previous day, bringing the total death toll from both incidents to at least 15.
According to Amnesty International, these violent episodes highlight an ongoing campaign targeting communities in southern Benue State. The organization reiterated its concerns over the lack of protection for residents who have faced recurring attacks by armed groups.
“Communities in Otukpo and across the state cannot continue to be left entirely at the mercy of armed attackers who operate with complete impunity and total disregard for the right to life,” the organization stated.
Amnesty International emphasized that the Nigerian government’s persistent inability to prevent these attacks or hold those responsible accountable perpetuates a cycle of violence, leaving residents at constant risk of death, displacement, and loss of livelihood.
The organization is calling on the authorities to carry out an independent and impartial investigation to identify, arrest, and prosecute all those involved in the killings, in line with the rule of law.
“The government is obligated to protect lives and property. Those responsible for these attacks must be identified, arrested, and held accountable through a credible judicial process,” Amnesty International added.
