Boat Capsizes in Cameroon, Claims at Least 20 Lives
A tragic boat accident off the coast of Cameroon has resulted in the deaths of at least 20 individuals, including 18 Nigerians, who were en route to a community in Adamawa State, Nigeria.
The vessel was reportedly traveling from Garoua, Cameroon, to Yola, Nigeria, when it capsized late Monday night amid a violent storm, according to information gathered by DAILY POST on Tuesday evening.
Witnesses indicated that the boat, which was carrying over 50 passengers and heavily loaded with iron rods and other construction materials destined for Dasin, a village in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State, was caught in severe weather around midnight, leading to its overturning.
Initial estimates suggested that as many as 30 persons may have perished; however, local authorities have since confirmed that the death toll stands at approximately 20.
Among the deceased, the 18 Nigerians have been buried in the Wuro Bokki community in Fufore LGA. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing for the remaining passengers who have not been accounted for.
Divers from both Cameroon and Nigeria are participating in the recovery operations. Many survivors have been taken to hospitals in nearby border communities for treatment.
