Born goalscorer, all-rounder, unbreakable wall: 1xCup 2026 main stars

Fourth Edition of Nigeria’s 1xCup Underway, Teams Compete for Glory
The fourth edition of Nigeria’s premier grassroots football tournament, the 1xCup 2026, is currently in progress. With the top four teams vying for the championship title, individual players are also in pursuit of various accolades that could elevate their careers in professional football.
Top Scorer Spotlight
Ezeji Ikenna of Ighalo FC has emerged as the leading candidate for the 1xCup 2026 Golden Boot, accompanied by a ₦300,000 cash prize. Ikenna has demonstrated remarkable skill, netting nine goals and tallying two assists over seven matches. Although Ighalo FC has been eliminated from the tournament, Ikenna’s standing as the tournament’s top scorer remains unchallenged.
Initially, Emeka Sylvester of Ajuwa FA had been hard on Ikenna’s heels, with seven goals and three assists in five matches. Sylvester also earned the MVP award three times. However, following his team’s exit in the round of 16, his chances of surpassing Ikenna have diminished.
Lawal Muiz of Young Strikers FC and Obiora Sunny of Collins Edwin SC are still in the running, each with six goals. Both players have at least two matches remaining—which include the semifinal and possibly the final or third-place match—providing them an opportunity to capture the top scorer title.
MVP Race Heats Up
As the tournament draws to a close, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award is still up for grabs, alongside another ₦300,000 cash prize. Obiora Sunny stands out as a frontrunner, with six goals and five assists to his credit. His performance places him among the leaders in both scoring and assists, enhancing his MVP prospects.
Emeka Sylvester and Hafiz Odunayo of Elite Stars FC have also been notable players throughout the tournament, each winning the MVP award three times. Their cumulative contributions could influence their standing as the event progresses.
However, team dynamics also play a crucial role. Collins Edwin SC boasts the tournament’s best defensive record, conceding only three goals in seven matches, thanks to a disciplined backline led by defender Ejiofor Morgan. Should Collins Edwin SC continue its strong performance, Morgan could also find himself in contention for the MVP award.
Golden Glove Race
The competition for the tournament’s best goalkeeper and the accompanying ₦250,000 prize remains fierce. Ebitu Michael of Newhope Naija FC leads the clean sheet race with four, but Chidera Maduka of Collins Edwin SC is close behind. With two matches still to play, Maduka has a strong opportunity to surpass his competitor, especially given the impressive defensive capabilities of his team.
The 1xCup 2026 not only showcases emerging talent but also serves as a springboard for future careers in football. Previous editions have seen various players transition to professional leagues across Africa, Europe, and Asia, with some even earning spots on the Nigerian national team.
