Sixteen Rescued, Two Dead After Building Collapse in Lagos

LAGOS — Emergency responders have rescued 16 individuals following the collapse of a two-storey residential building in Satellite Town, while two others have been confirmed dead. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) provided the latest updates on Thursday as search and rescue operations continued at the site.

The agency reported receiving a distress call at approximately 11:37 a.m. regarding the incident on Old Ojo Road near Alakija Bus Stop, off the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. Emergency teams from the Ijegun-Egba Fire Station were quickly mobilized and arrived on the scene at around 11:49 a.m. to initiate rescue efforts.

The building was occupied by multiple residents at the time of the collapse. Initially, 10 victims were rescued from the debris with varying injuries and transferred to medical personnel for treatment.

According to the most recent update, six additional individuals were rescued, bringing the total number of survivors to 16. Two fatalities have been reported, confirmed by the agency in a statement.

“Rescue efforts are still ongoing, and six additional victims have been successfully rescued from the debris, bringing the number to 16. Regrettably, two persons have been recovered dead,” the statement said.

The agency emphasized that emergency responders remain at the site, working diligently to ensure all affected individuals are accounted for and that the area is secured.

“Search and rescue operations remain ongoing as emergency responders continue efforts to locate, extricate, and evacuate any persons who may still be trapped beneath the debris,” the statement added.

The operation is being coordinated by multiple agencies, including the LSFRS, Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Navy, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

Authorities stated that rescue operations will continue, with further updates to be provided as the situation develops.
