Canadian Boy Dies Of Rabies After Waking Up With Bat On His Face
An 11-year-old boy from Canada has died from rabies, a tragic outcome linked to an encounter with a bat while he was asleep. The incident took place during a family vacation at a cottage in Ontario during the summer of 2024 but was detailed in a report published recently in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
According to the report, the boy woke up to find a bat on his face. His father removed the bat and, after noticing no visible bite marks or scratches, released it. The family did not seek medical treatment, believing there was no risk of infection.
Nineteen days later, the boy began to experience facial numbness, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. His health deteriorated rapidly, and he was eventually diagnosed with rabies. He passed away after more than two weeks in the hospital.
Health experts caution that bat bites can be very small and often go unnoticed. They emphasize the importance of seeking immediate medical evaluation for anyone who has direct contact with a bat. Prompt post-exposure treatment can prevent rabies, a disease that is almost always fatal once symptoms appear.
This rare case serves as a critical reminder of the importance of urgent medical care following any potential exposure to bats, even if visible injuries are not present.
