Kebbi State Governor Reunites Children with Families After Trafficking Rescue

KEBBI STATE, Nigeria — Five underage children have been reunited with their parents after being rescued from suspected human traffickers. The children were allegedly being transported from Kebbi South Senatorial District to Edo State.

Dr. Nasir Idris, the Governor of Kebbi State, was represented by Deputy Governor Umar Abubakar Tafida during the handover ceremony, which took place in Birnin-Kebbi. In a statement, Governor Idris urged parents to remain vigilant and to avoid allowing strangers to take their children under the pretense of offering better educational opportunities.

“Responsible parents have a duty to protect and care for their children,” Idris said, emphasizing the importance of knowing the identities and whereabouts of those entrusted with their children’s welfare. He further warned that the state government would take appropriate action against parents who neglect their responsibilities.

During the ceremony, the Deputy Governor handed the rescued children back to their families, while also advising parents to exercise increased caution.

Misbau Iya Kaura, the State Commandant of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), reported that the children were taken from residents in Danko-Wasagu and Zuru Local Government Areas under the guise of enrolling them in modern schools. They were intercepted in Gusau, Zamfara State, while en route to Edo.

Kaura confirmed the arrest of five suspects associated with the case, while one suspect remains at large. He also called on the Kebbi State Government to provide adequate facilities for accommodating rescued victims during ongoing investigations.

Yakubu Bala Tafida, Secretary to the State Government, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to combating human trafficking and ensuring the safety of children in the state.
