Nigerian Army Day Celebration Highlights Commitment to National Security
Bauchi—Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s dedication to strengthening national security and enhancing the welfare of its personnel during a goodwill message at the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL). The event included a Juma’at prayer at the Obienu Barracks Central Mosque, marking the Army’s 163rd anniversary.
Represented by the Commander of the Armoured Corps, Lt. Gen. Shaibu addressed military personnel, veterans, and their families, expressing gratitude for their sacrifices in service to the nation.
“This anniversary serves as a moment to reflect on our journey, honor those who paid the ultimate price for our nation, and recommit ourselves to protecting Nigeria’s unity and integrity,” he stated. He emphasized the theme of this year’s celebration, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” which underscores the Army’s constitutional duty to safeguard lives and enhance public confidence.
The COAS noted significant progress in combating terrorism, insurgency, and other security challenges, attributing these successes to the dedication and professionalism of Army personnel, alongside collaboration with other security agencies.
Lt. Gen. Shaibu outlined his command philosophy, aimed at building a resilient and adaptable Army equipped to address Nigeria’s evolving security landscape. Central to this vision is the “Soldier First” initiative, which prioritizes the welfare of military personnel through improved living conditions, healthcare, education, and capacity-building programs.
In his remarks, he honored fallen soldiers for their bravery, recognizing their contributions as a lasting source of inspiration. He also acknowledged the support of wounded personnel, veterans, and military families.
The Army chief encouraged participants to use the occasion for prayer, seeking guidance for the nation, and urged everyone to uphold the Army’s core values of loyalty, discipline, and professionalism.
In closing, Lt. Gen. Shaibu congratulated all members of the Nigerian Army on their accomplishments and the milestone of the 163rd anniversary, invoking prayers for continued protection and guidance for the Army and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
