Customs arrests suspected wildlife trafficker, rescues baby gorilla in Kano

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has arrested a suspected wildlife trafficker and rescued a baby gorilla during a raid in Kofar Mata, Kano State. This operation is seen as a significant step in combatting illegal primate trafficking.
The raid took place on July 7 and involved the NCS Special Wildlife Office of the Customs Intelligence Unit, along with Focused Conservation, the Customs Police Unit, and officers from the Kano/Jigawa Area Command. The operation followed weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance, according to a statement released by the NCS on Thursday.
Assistant Comptroller of Customs Anuhu Mani, officer in charge of the NCS Special Wildlife Office, reported that the rescued gorilla is currently receiving veterinary care, specialized medical attention, and rehabilitation.
Mani emphasized that the operation targeted syndicates involved in the illegal trade of protected primates in the Kano region. He noted that the success of the raid highlights the benefits of intelligence-driven efforts and collaboration with conservation organizations.
“Investigations are actively ongoing as we follow all actionable leads generated from this operation,” Mani stated. He added that the identity of the suspect and additional operational details will remain undisclosed while investigations continue.
The NCS maintains a zero-tolerance policy against wildlife trafficking and is dedicated to enforcing endangered species laws to protect Nigeria’s natural heritage.
