Carroll Pursues $5 Million Damages from Trump After Supreme Court Refusal

E. Jean Carroll is seeking the payment of $5 million awarded to her by a civil court, following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to decline Donald Trump’s appeal.

On Wednesday, Judge Lewis Kaplan granted Carroll’s request for an expedited process to pursue the damages. He directed Trump’s legal team to respond by July 7.

The request for urgency came just a day after Carroll’s attorneys accused Trump’s legal team of delaying the payment by consistently introducing new defenses as prior attempts to stall the case failed.

Carroll, a former advice columnist for Elle magazine, has been entangled in a legal battle with Trump since 2019 when she accused him of raping her in a Manhattan department store dressing room in the mid-1990s.

Trump has vehemently denied Carroll’s allegations, dismissing her character by stating that she is “not my type” and asserting that the incident “never happened.” In a 2019 interview with The Hill, he reiterated his denial.

By November of that year, Carroll filed a defamation lawsuit against Trump, claiming he damaged her reputation by suggesting her allegations were fabricated for personal gain. In 2022, she filed a second suit, which included charges of defamation and battery under New York’s Adult Survivors Act. This case referenced a post from Trump on Truth Social in which he described Carroll as a “complete con job.”

In May 2023, a jury ruled in favor of Carroll in the initial case, determining that Trump was liable for sexual abuse and defamation. However, the jury did not find him liable for rape. In January 2024, the second jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million in damages.

Trump has since appealed both rulings, asserting that the trials were flawed due to the inclusion of evidence regarding past allegations of sexual misconduct. On June 29, the Supreme Court declined to hear his petition to overturn the $5 million decision, leaving the lower court’s rulings intact. The second case remains under consideration by the Supreme Court.

Following the recent Supreme Court decision, Trump took to Truth Social to label Carroll’s lawsuit a “fake case” and vowed to continue his legal fight, framing it as an attack against the U.S. and future presidential candidates.

Since the initial jury’s decision, the amount owed to Carroll has increased from $5 million to approximately $5.8 million. Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, declared in a court filing on Tuesday that delays in payment should cease, stating, “This is the end of the line.” Kaplan emphasized that Carroll has cooperated with Trump’s requests for postponements, but that cooperation would no longer continue.

“It is time for him to pay Carroll,” she stated.
