Ebola: FG directs hospitals to prepare isolation centres, protective equipment

The Federal Government has instructed health facilities nationwide to enhance their isolation centers and ensure the availability of protective equipment and medical supplies in preparation for any potential outbreaks of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
Dr. Yunus Mohammed Eze, Deputy Head of Clinical Services at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Birnin Kudu, Jigawa State, shared this information during an interview with reporters.
The directive was issued through the Federal Ministry of Health, emphasizing the need for hospitals to implement emergency response measures. These measures are aimed at ensuring the early detection, isolation, and management of suspected Ebola cases.
Dr. Eze reported that FMC Birnin Kudu has acted on the government’s instructions by reinforcing its isolation unit and alerting healthcare workers.
“The Federal Government, via the Ministry of Health, reached out to health facilities across the country, directing them to prepare their isolation units and secure necessary resources to protect healthcare workers and manage affected patients,” he said.
He noted that the management at FMC Birnin Kudu promptly began preparations. “Our isolation unit was strengthened, and we are ready to isolate any suspected cases and refer them as needed,” he added.
Dr. Eze explained that the hospital has also arranged protocols for referring suspected or confirmed cases to designated treatment centers when appropriate.
To promote public awareness, he indicated that the hospital has intensified health education efforts through its Infectious Diseases Unit and Community Medicine Unit. These initiatives aim to raise awareness among residents regarding infectious diseases and preventative measures.
Additionally, the hospital is collaborating with the Jigawa State Media Corporation to inform the public about disease prevention and the importance of early reporting of suspected cases.
Healthcare professionals at the hospital regularly educate patients and visitors, encouraging them to disseminate this information to their families and communities.
