Egungun festival not license to terrorise citizens – Olubadan warns masquerades, followers

Olubadan of Ibadanland Urges Peace During Egungun Festival
IBADAN, Nigeria — Oba Rasidi Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland and former governor of Oyo State, has issued a strong statement emphasizing that the upcoming Egungun masquerade festival should not be used as an excuse for violence in the city.
In a statement released by his media aide, Chief Adeola Oloko, Ladoja clarified that the festival, set to begin tomorrow, serves as a celebration of peace and cultural heritage. He urged masqueraders and their supporters to avoid any violent actions during the festivities.
“The festival is not a platform for old grievances, supremacy contests, or retaliatory attacks,” he stated. “Violent conduct of any kind is punishable under the law.”
The annual Egungun festival, which showcases masquerades from various local compounds, is anticipated to attract significant crowds throughout strategic locations in Ibadan. Ladoja encouraged participants to use the occasion for reflection and unity.
“This is a time to celebrate with drumbeats, dance, and merriment,” he added. “We must remember our history as a people and embrace the essence of harmony.”
The public is reminded that maintaining peace during the festival is crucial for honoring its traditions and cultural significance.
