Eliminating repentant bandits, secessionists against religious, international law – Sheikh Gumi

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has spoken out against calls to execute repentant insurgents and secessionists, asserting that such proposals conflict with religious teachings and breach international law.

Gumi’s remarks, made in a Facebook post on Friday, follow recent appeals from lawmakers for the Federal Government to cease rehabilitating former terrorists and instead to prosecute those convicted of terrorism and related crimes.

The cleric condemned the idea of executing repentant individuals, which he described as morally indefensible and violating both religious and international legal principles. He emphasized that actions of this nature are under the scrutiny of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and urged stakeholders to reflect on the potential legal and moral repercussions.

“Adopting the same methods as terrorist organizations undermines morality and impedes progress in conflict resolution,” Gumi stated. He cautioned against allowing emotions to guide decisions in the ongoing struggle against insecurity.

On Tuesday, the Senate unanimously resolved that individuals found guilty of terrorism and organized criminal offenses should be prosecuted rather than rehabilitated. This resolution forms part of broader efforts to address the escalating security challenges facing Nigeria and aims to restore public confidence in the nation’s criminal justice system.
