Fix bad roads before constructing new ones – Peter Obi tells Nigerian Govt

NDC Presidential Candidate Calls for Road Infrastructure Rehabilitation Before New Projects

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged the Federal Government to prioritize the repair and maintenance of existing road infrastructure before announcing new construction projects.

In a statement posted on his verified social media account Monday, Obi emphasized the necessity for functional and motorable roads in Nigeria. He argued that current efforts should focus on addressing the condition of existing roads rather than launching new initiatives that may primarily serve public relations purposes.

Obi specifically referenced the Asaba–Benin Road, describing it as a crucial part of Nigeria’s transportation network. He noted that this route is vital for travelers from various states, including Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Rivers, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Abia, Enugu, and parts of Benue and Kogi, who rely on it to reach Lagos.

Despite its importance, Obi pointed out that many sections of the road are in poor condition, causing significant delays and difficulties for travelers, businesses, and transport operators.

“There is a pertinent reason I have consistently advocated that we should refrain from initiating new road construction projects until we have thoroughly rehabilitated and maintained our existing road network,” Obi stated.

He argued that the focus should be on repairing key roads rather than pursuing new ventures that offer minimal benefits. He lamented that the poor state of infrastructure is not isolated to the Asaba-Benin route, but rather reflects a broader issue affecting many of Nigeria’s busiest highways.

Obi concluded by stressing that immediate action to improve existing road conditions should take precedence over political motivations for superficial enhancements.
