Flood: NiMet raises fresh alarm, places FCT, Benue, 25 other states on red alert

Nigerian Meteorological Agency Issues Flash Flood Warning for 26 States

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a flash flood warning affecting 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The agency has identified several northern states, including Bauchi, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, and Kogi, as being at high risk for flooding from July 11 to July 20, 2026.

According to NiMet, the increased risk of flooding is attributed to ongoing rainfall throughout the country, which has left soils saturated and unable to absorb further precipitation.

The warning was released in NiMet’s Probable Flash Flood Risk Map for the second dekad of July, presented to reporters on Sunday.

In addition to the northern states, heavy rainfall has also put other regions at risk, including Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and the FCT.

NiMet cautioned that the combination of relentless rainfall and already waterlogged ground is likely to result in widespread flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, urban centers, and regions with inadequate drainage systems.
